Robert Burns letters

The National Trust for Scotland and the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum are using a blog to publish Robert Burns' letters on the day they were written from November 1787 onwards.

The blog is part of the work by the National Trust for Scotland to not only celebrate Burns’ 250th anniversary and raise awareness of the man and his letters, but also the upcoming new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.

This Welcome from David Hopes, Burns’ Curator, Burns Cottage Museum, Alloway further explains the reasoning behind the project.

The Island

AUTHOR : Victoria Hislop

This book has been reviewed in Readers in the Mist twice before by
Diamantina and by Carolyn.

BOOK CHAIN COMMENTS :

  • A novel about Crete durinig and post WWII. A novel about leprosy. A novel about relationships. Everything the blurb notes sy is true, it's moving, gripping, page-turning, beautifully crafted. I look forward to reading more of her work.
  • I found it hard to get into this one. I didn't really like the characters and found it hard to get stuck into it. Didn't enjoy it at all.
  • Hislop's sure-footed storytelling and her thorough research make this novel immensely readable. My only gripe is coming across cliches at times; and the way Anna and Maria are characterised as Bad Sister and Good Sister respectively. Both are extremes. A little more light and shade there would have worked for me, though I do appreciate that the social mores of that time and place were restrictive.
  • I found this trite and formulaic. Don't bother.
